Reflection for November 23, 2011

When you have eaten and are satisfied,
praise the Lord for the good land
you have been given.

-Deuteronomy 8:10

... it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to mail letters
and purchase bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
It is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you everywhere
like a shadow or a friend.

--from Naomi Shibab Nye's poem, Kindness

At this meditation on the eve of Thanksgiving
let us ponder and give thanks for occasions
of kindness given and received this past year.

Reflection for November 16, 2011

Enough

Enough. These few words are enough.

If not these words, this breath.

If not this breath, this sitting here.

This opening to the life

We have refused

Again and again

Until now.

Until now.

Reflection for November 2, 2011

Dia De Los Muertos

To be of the Earth is to know
the restlessness of being a seed
the darkness of being planted
the struggle towards the light
the pain of growth into the light
the joy of bursting and bearing fruit
the love of being food for someone
the scattering of your seeds
the decay of the seasons
the mystery of death
and the miracle of birth.
